Mt. Etna

 October 10, 2024

Today we had breakfast on our rooftop terrace then set out for Mt. Etna - about 45 minutes drive. The drive was windy - lots of turns (thank goodness for Google maps!) we arrived to find hundreds of people and many buses and cars. We bought a ticket for the tunica to take us 2500m toward the top. We opted out of actually taking the 4x4 bus up to 3000m and a guide to the crater. We had a drink at the cafe overlooking the black landscape. Back at the bottom, we had a nice lunch and did some shopping. Our host Silvio made our dinner reservations for a restaurant I had found on TripAdvisor. We took another way down from the mountain. Sicily’s roads are not great and we notice a lot of trash on the sides of the roads. I looked into it (since Naples was really dirty with tons of piled up trash) and there is a waste management crisis in this part of Italy because of landfills and the mafia. The photos below are in reverse order.

We split the chef’s special linguine with assorted seafood

Two of about twenty turtles that live outside our room on the patio. They love the hibiscus flowers.

Lunch at the base of Mt. Etna. I only ate some of the inside of that huge pizza and no crust

But we did have our drink!

As far up as we went. The summit had smoke pouring out
