Herculaneum

 Oct 8, 2024

Today we had a nice breakfast at the hotel, then walked to the nearest metro station to get a ticket to the train station. The one seemingly working machine was not working at all and so without another option, we called an Uber. We arrived at the train station with no time to spare and miraculously bought our train ticket and made it on the train just as it was pulling out.

Once off at our stop, we had to make it to the archaeological park before 10:30. Again we just made it!! Our archaeologist guide began our 2 hour tour of Herculaneum. A fascinating look into the lives that were lost at this resort town in 79 AD.

Afterwards, on our way back to the train station, we stopped for a bite to eat and I got my favorite, lasagna bolognese! It was delicious as always and hit the spot! David got a margarita pizza and we had beer and wine.

Our bill at the end!

We got to the train station - an uphill climb only to find no way to buy a ticket! Finally, a booth opened and we were on our way. We don’t recommend Naples as a destination. It’s dirty, e is covered in graffiti, and it doesn’t look as though they have garbage pickup. It’s just piled up on the streets everywhere and in overflowing trash cans. Flies are everywhere too. And Steven’s pizza is much better than any we’ve tasted here! We’re glad to be leaving tomorrow.

We walked from the Napoli train station back to our hotel. About a 30 minute walk through some sketchy parts of town. A woman warned me to keep my phone close rather than hold it in my hand.

Back in the old town, where our hotel is, we stopped at the famous Christmas Alley (San Gregorio). Here there is a tradition, called presepe, where you over time build a nativity scene for your home.

Artisan workshops line the street with all types of professions represented along with the Holy family and some move. It’s really interesting and I have a video, but can’t upload it here, for some reason.

For a light dinner, we just sat in a cafe and people watched and then back at our hotel, which is very nice, we had a cheese and salami assortment and turned in for the night.
