To Budapest we go

Meg graciously dropped us at the airport only an hour after Amanda finished her final final exam before starting nursing school!! She has done extremely well, earning the highest grades in her classes. Very exciting next chapter!! Steven is making huge strides in his St Bruno franchise and we couldn’t be more proud! 

So, with grateful hearts, off we go to see a part of Europe we’ve been looking forward to seeing. We’re at the New Orleans airport club MSY having a cocktail. 


Budapest weather looks rainy, but we’ll make the best of it. We have a few things planned including their famous bath house, a market hall tour, and a dinner cruise on the Danube. 

We made it finally to Budapest around 8 pm through Charlotte and London - about 18 hours. We unpacked and headed out to find a restaurant. Neither of us ate or drank on the plane. Just tried to sleep. 

We are walking distance from most everything according to our awesome taxi driver! He was a big help and a tour guide of sorts.

Just around the corner from our hotel Regency Hotel Budapest is St. Stephen’s Basilica. We found a cozy place under the shadow of the basilica and enjoyed a Hungarian Cabernet and a local lager beer. And we split some bruschetta and a veal dish. 1 dollar buys 300 HUN so you have to do the mental math. We think prices are reasonable.

Our taxi driver kept having us take pictures of his phone. He tried to teach me general hello, thank you, etc. we just ended up laughing at how bad I was remembering or pronouncing.

 Aug 6 Since we left Copenhagen, we have had terrible weather. It’s chilly, windy and wet. Our first day Aug 4, it was a sea day and we got to know the ship. We get up every morning and get the days trivia quiz, crossword puzzles and sudoku and try to finish the quiz over breakfast. August 5 we stopped in Vik (the name Viking came from here). We had signed up for an excursion called Fjords and Glacier. We tendered to the harbor and boarded a bus that travelled along the fjord to the glacier museum. We watched an unfortunately unnarrated film taken with a drone beneath a helicopter that caused some vertigo. We then perused through the small museum where you learned about glaciers, prehistoric animals, the iceman, Ozi, and some children focused scientific processes about the glaciers blue color and how it travels along the slope of the land by the sheer weight of it and carved the fjords. NOLA to Copenhagen

 July 31-Aug 2 Our direct flight from New Orleans to London was terribly delayed and as a result we missed our connection to Copenhagen on August 1. British Airways was very accommodating and put us up at the Radisson Blu hotel near Heathrow with a shuttle, dinner voucher and a breakfast voucher. We arrived and checked in by 2ish and realized Windsor was only 9 miles away. So we grabbed an Uber and were dropped off in front of Charles’ house in Windsor. We decided to go to a restaurant we’d been to before - the Prince Harry. We got the bangers and mash and some British beer and wine. After dinner we walked around the village and shopped before calling another Uber to take us back.  Our hotel is elegant and comfortable. Our alarm was set for 5:30 so that we could get to the airport in enough time to make sure our luggage was transferred from British Airways to Scandinavia Airlines. Fjords and Vikings

 August 9 We’ve been blessed with better weather these last several days.  We had to skip our Olden stop due to seas of 18 feet and 60 mph winds, so we hung out on the safe fjords and instead went to Skjolden. Not much to do there but we made the best of it.  Onward to Åndalsnes where we took a kayaking tour and then went up to the top of a nearby fjord feature via cable car and took some pictures and enjoyed a local beer.  Our ship from atop the mountain  From there, our ship traveled to Trondheim. There we took a walking tour in a sunny day and then once back on board, enjoyed an afternoon onboard by the pool.  Nidaros Cathedral The angel at the top of the cathedral has the face of Bob Dylan.  The rose window. This cathedral was built on the site of King Olaf’s burial ground. Started in 1070 Trondheim’s old bridge In the evening, we had a nice dinner and then enjoyed a concert by a polish violin virtuoso.
