Game of Thrones Tour
July 9, 2019
After breakfast we walked to the nearby hostel (very nice!) to meet our Game of Thrones tour bus. We drove along the beautiful volcanic black stone beach to Carlough. Here in the harbor, Arya leaps over a wall (somewhere else) after being repeatedly stabbed by a waif and then lands in the water. She then resurfaces and climbs up a stairway out of the water. That was Carlough Harbor.
Somewhere along the drive, our driver showed us the closest place where Scotland is from Ireland. A part of Scotland called Mull of Kintyre. Paul and Linda McCartney lived there and he wrote a song in the late 70s called Mull of Kintyre. I have not listened to it, but I don’t remember it, despite having Paul McCartneys albums even after he left the Beatles. He also showed us where, only last week, they were filming the prequel to GoT.
The second stop was near Cushendall where the caves there were used for many different scenes, including in Season 8, when Jamie and Euron Greyjoy fight below Kings Landing and when Davos and Melisandre come ashore, and where Melisandre’s birth of the shadow baby.
Our third stop was at the Dark Hedges or Kings Landing Road. These beech trees were planted in 1775 by James Stewart. His home is called Gracehill after his wife and the beech trees were his driveway.
Our next stop was Giants Causeway where the story is that giant Finn McCool was bullied by a giant from Scotland. It's an elaborate legend, but it's really a very cool basalt formation from volcanic activity. The stones are different heights and all shaped in a hexagonal pattern.
Next stop was Ballintoy Harbor, or the Iron Islands where many scenes were filmed including Theon and his sister. The dragon glass source and others.
We hiked to the Carrick-A-Rede rope bridge although we didn't cross it. A nearby car park was used to film where Brienne first became worthy of the kings guard by defeating Renly’s knight and other scenes involving Renly and Maergery.
It was a long an exhausting day! We got back and decided to go listen to some Irish music at a nearby pub.
